This weekend I tried out S’moreables, Kinnikinnick’s gluten-free answer to the graham cracker.
Right off the bat, before I even opened the box, I have to admit I was apprehensive. For one thing, I just don’t eat processed food anymore. I have completely given up grains and sugar, and I like how I feel. Also, like I mentioned in a previous post, S’moreables have some funky ingredients. Here they are:
Sheesh! The ingredients list reads like a chemistry experiment, not a recipe. So I was expecting them to taste very…well, fake.
I was wrong.
When I opened the box, what I noticed first was that they smelled exactly like graham crackers. Exactly! Or at least, what I remember graham crackers smell like. It’s been a while. David agreed with me, the aroma was dead on.
Next came the taste test. They were good. Really good. They don’t quite match the taste (or what I remember of it) of the gluten variety, but these crackers taste close enough, in my opinion, to be called graham crackers. They were a little sweet for me, but I don’t eat sugar anymore, so that might not be the case for everyone else. They were nice and crispy, and had the same whole-grain texture that I remember. And there was absolutely no weird aftertaste.
Here’s a quick rundown:
The Good: Good taste, texture, aroma. Might not fool someone plain, but definitely would when used in a recipe or as a pie crust. Work great for s’mores.
The Bad: Small box, tiny crackers. There were 18 crackers in my box (8 oz total, each is 3.25” by 1.5”), and I’m not sure that would be enough for a 9” pie crust. I would make sure I had some other crackers or cookies on hand to stretch out my crumbs, just in case.
The Ugly: I really wish Kinnikinnick would use more “real” ingredients. I would not normally eat anything that had an ingredient list like the one above. I’m just saying…
All in all, S’moreables are pretty darn good. I didn’t get a chance to price them locally, but they are available at Amazon here.
But what about the S’MORES?
Ooh, I’m glad you asked! Just three ingredients: S’moreables, Nutella, and mini marshmallows. And the taste? Divine! But don’t take my word for it…
