Maybe it’s time to review…

Our home is wheat-free. It’s almost gluten-free, except for the cold cereal that David eats. That’s where the wheat-free part comes into play. I refuse to have Shredded Wheat dust flying all over my kitchen. So David tries to find cereals that are mostly gluten free. I tried to get him to buy the completely gluten free ones, but they tend to be very expensive or very tasteless (or both). He eats a lot of cereal, and I mean A LOT. So in the interest of maintaining fiscal solvency, he suggested, and I agreed, that as long as there isn’t any wheat, cereal is fairly easily contained. He has his own, easily-identifiable “gluten bowl”, and a”gluten counter” that he is responsible for keeping clean. I have occasional hissy fits when he forgets and uses another bowl for his cereal, since gluten can be tenacious and I have been poisoned from hidden gluten clinging to the surface of a bowl that has been washed. Since our dishwasher sucks, his gluten bowl must be washed by hand, by David, using his special “gluten sponge”.

I believe I have already mentioned my militant tendencies when it comes to protecting my health, so none of this should surprise you. I also mentioned that I haven’t been accidentally poisoned by gluten since April 2007. Basically, our arrangement is a win-win situation. I stay healthy, and David doesn’t get yelled at.

Anyhow…

David came home yesterday from the store, all excited that he found gluten-free cereal. Not just gluten-free, but economical and gluten-free! What a deal! We can have a gluten-free home! I saw the box from a distance, and it looked like the same Great Value brand corn flakes he’s had before, which contained gluten. So asked him to read me the ingredients, thinking, “maybe they reformulated them. Wouldn’t that be cool?” He started listing everything: degermed yellow cornmeal, sugar, salt, high fructose corn syrup, malt extract…

Um, Honey? You do realize that malt extract is barley malt extract, which contains gluten, don’t you?

At least he tried…
